California Politician Admits He's Gay After DUI Bust. So What?

An anti-gay California state senator was placed under arrest for drunk driving after leaving a gay bar. A male passenger was in the vehicle along with the lawmaker was not arrested...
State Sen. Roy Ashburn was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol at about 2:00 a.m. on March 3 when his state-issued vehicle was observed being driven erratically. The driver, identified as Ashburn, was taken in and charged for driving under the influence. Channel 13 (Sacramento, CA.) reported that unidentified sources said the senator had been at Faces, a popular gay nightspot, prior to his arrest.
In a March 4 article, the online news site Talking Points Memo characterized Ashburn, who is married and has four children, as "a fierce opponent of gay rights" who had led anti-marriage equality rallies.
I have a couple thoughts on this.  First, the only reason the guy came out of the closet is because he is a Republican State Senator who was driving from a gay night club when busted for driving recklessly.  In Bakersfield, CA.  With a male companion (Where was Eric Massa?  One can't help but wonder...).  And all the while, reveling in his reputation as an "anti-gay" legislator who now admits liking sex with men.  And unable to come to grips with his own sexual nature. Sounds like a made-for-TV movie.
For the record, I believe what anyone does in their own bedroom (short of making "Fruit of the Loonie" underwear bombs - another post) is not my concern.  I actually feel more disdain over the infidelity than the "plumbing" of the individual he was consorting with.  Cheating is cheating - period.
That said, are we supposed to feel greater empathy or sympathy because he's gay?  It's not like he has cancer or some other unfortunate circumstance of life.  And even if he did, such a condition doesn't provide a license to fornicate.  And, isn't using his sexuality as such a back-handed slap to those who are GLBT?
Anyhow, more proof that we have corruption and narcissists on both sides of the aisle.
